Think Streetwise Be Streetsmart

Filed under: Personal Alarms,Personal Safety — admin @ 1:07 pm

As a parent I am constantly looking out for my kids, teaching them what’s right from wrong, and hopefully given them a chance to grow into respectable individuals. As they grow, I hope they’ll have an understanding of what ‘streetwise’ and ‘streetsmart’ is all about (and that just doesn’t mean they know what to do when it comes to crossing the road or finding their way to the shops).

Being streetwise in today’s society is all about safety and knowing what to do in certain situations and most of all trusting your instincts.

With Britain being in the middle of a binge drinking culture some gangs or groups will only be too “happy” to try and intimidate you into handing over money or possessions. Trusting your instincts could mean the difference between being put in a dangerous situation or walking away safely.

If however you are not as streetwise as you may think there are a few precautions that you can do protect yourself and your possessions:

  • While out walking/running try and stay close to the kerb or in the middle of the road (if you are going on the road – then always face oncoming traffic) as this makes you further away from dark openings, bushes and trees where potential assailants may be hiding.
  • If you are approaching your home or car have your keys already in your hand as this stops you fumbling through bags and pockets outside your property.
  • If you are planning on going-out, plan a route that is well lit, don’t take chances, if possible walk in a crowd and if not ask your friends to meet you half-way.
  • While standing at a bus stop or waiting for a taxi always stand with back to the wall, this will prevent anyone sneaking up on you.

Although there are numerous precautions that can be done to help protect yourself there are also various personal alarms and defence sprays, that can be used to alert people that you need help, or give you those precious several seconds you require to make a safe getaway.

  1. Some really great info. I think personal alarms are a great form of non lethal personal defense. I bought one for my mum and she loves it.
