Each morning I read the newspapers, and it genuinely feels that everytime we step outside our homes we are putting ourselves into extreme danger. According to the number of random attacks on a person in the press. I read of people going about their daily business, walking to the shops, going on a bus or just taking a casual stroll in the local park, then getting attacked, robbed or even worse.

Keeping Your House Safe Day and Night
At the end of the night, you pull out the plug to the TV or stereo, turn out the lights and lock the doors, then head to bed knowing that you are safe within your home. Or are you? In times of economic decline, it is imperative that you get your home security right! As opportunistic thieves will only be to happy to cash in on your mistakes.
There is a simple test, ask yourself, “do you feel safe day and night while you are in your own home?” We all know the answer should be yes, but with most people, if they are honest with themselves the answer will be no, or it could be better.

Back Seat Hotel Security
When we book our annual holidays we automatically take a ‘back seat’ when it comes to personal protection & security and tend to let the hotels own internal security take over. Tourists all over the world seem to take the “it will never happen to me” attitude when on foreign shores. Just because you are on holiday or on a business trip doesn’t mean you have to let your guard down.

Stopping False Alarms
Business and home alarms are there to do a job, that is to alert the owners or passers-by that someone is trying to gain access to the premises unwontedly. They are designed for that purpose, but to be honest how many people while out at the weekend hear the constant ‘bleeping’ and ‘screeching’ of home and business alarms and no-one even blinking an eyelid? Alarms that are constantly being set off falsely have very little or no protection to the building they are meant to be protecting.
Most people have now got alarms in their homes and businesses, so how can you stop them from simply setting themselves off when no-one is in the house or office and simply becoming a noise nuisance?

Simple Door Security
Most homeowners and employers will spend money on Hi-Tec alarm systems, driveway alarms and PIR lighting for their homes, garages and businesses and then forget to arm one of the most vulnerable areas of their premises – their doors.
Incredibly, doors are one area that people often seem to give less attention to when it comes to security. OK, some will have a chain fitted, but for the majority, even having a decent lock seems to much hassle?

Don’t Become A Victim Of Street Theft
In a perfect world we would not have to worry about personal protection, we could go around doing our daily business without the worry of someone infringing our own personal space. However, reality is a million miles from Utopia. Although, reports suggest, many areas of crime are down, street theft is still on the increase. Street theft can often include someone stealing your mobile phone, I-Pod, handbag, purse, wallet or actual physical attacks against you.
In today’s society, people young and old, male or female can become victims of some kind of street theft. In many cases the victim of street theft can become too afraid to even leave their own front door – such is the brutality of some street theft cases.
For a majority of street theft victims even a simple walk to the shops or trip on the bus can become a very traumatic experience. Street theft victims become suspicious of everyone and find it extremely hard to feel safe.

Thou Shalt Not Steal
During the month of December 2009 the Church of England was in an uproar as one of its Reverends was giving a sermon at Sunday Service teaching us that during times of economic depression it was ok to steal products from shops – so long as they were taken from large national stores rather than small family owned shops and businesses.
The Reverend Tim Jones, a parish priest in the North of England says he was merely pointing out that when “every sociable acceptable avenue has been shut down, then the only avenue left is the unacceptable one”. Surely as a member of the faith HE must know that one of the Commandments is “thou shalt not steal” in-fact it is No 8 in a very short list of ten, so why is this man of the cloth telling less fortunate people to steal?

Home Comfort Fire Safety
With the New Year now here and the temperature refusing to rise above zero, daring to venture outside can become an impossible task especially for the elderly. In-fact many will be sitting in their homes watching television cuddled up on the couch with the halogen heater burning in the corner to keep the room nice and warm. Unfortunately, a lot of older people don’t have these heaters and rely on the old bar type heaters, gas fires or an open fire instead.
Looking into an open fire can be somewhat comforting, watching the flames lap round wooden logs, it gives a sense of warmth just thinking about it, but as with all fires there are dangers associated with open fires. With open fires you have to make sure that the chimneys are swept and free of any obstacles, also when lighting your open fire keep it small as it is easier to maintain should it get out of control.

Personal Protection Plans
In today’s society, all too often we will come into contact with some type of crime, whether it is in the local high street or in the local shop. Personal protection is about having a plan and knowing what to do if you are unlucky to be followed, feel threatened or even attacked.
As home and business owners we try our best to protect our property and possessions by installing the latest security hardware, surveillance cameras and motion sensors which can be placed in our homes, gardens and businesses to give us that safer feeling. But what about our own personal protection what can be done to protect ourselves?
In the New Year many people will be trying to lose weight as part of their New Year resolutions this may include a visit to the gym. Unfortunately, as we all know, this can work out very expensive, so for most this simply means doing more walking to the local park or to the local shops. As we get ready to go out for our ‘after dinner walk’ we make sure we are all prepared for our exercise, warm clothes, waterproofs, comfy shoes and personal alarm. As we get ready to venture out in the dark a personal alarm should be just as important as wearing a good pair of shoes.
