• As the weather heats up, you often leave your windows open, easy access for someone’s arm to simply reach in and take your wallet, rings, watch or car keys. Don’t leave valuable items near open windows or even in full view.

These are only a few precautions which can be taken to stop an opportunistic thief from simply walking away with your goods or money.

Business and home alarms are there to do a job, that is to alert the owners or passers-by that someone is trying to gain access to the premises unwontedly. They are designed for that purpose, but to be honest how many people while out at the weekend hear the constant ‘bleeping’ and ‘screeching’ of home and business alarms and no-one even blinking an eyelid? With the New Year now here and the temperature refusing to rise above zero, daring to venture outside can become an impossible task especially for the elderly. In-fact many will be sitting in their homes watching television cuddled up on the couch with the halogen heater burning in the corner to keep the room nice and warm. Unfortunately, a lot of older people don’t have these heaters and rely on the old bar type heaters, gas fires or an open fire instead.

Looking into an open fire can be somewhat comforting, watching the flames lap round wooden logs, it gives a sense of warmth just thinking about it, but as with all fires there are dangers associated with open fires. With open fires you have to make sure that the chimneys are swept and free of any obstacles, also when lighting your open fire keep it small as it is easier to maintain should it get out of control.

Thieves know that many large homes contain plenty of objects that can be easily sold on, making them ‘easy and fast money’. At Christmas time they’ll be watching out for homes that may be left unoccupied or owners off to bed early.

As a home owner you should be doing a risk assessment of your property, to make sure you have a good quality alarm system in your home, your windows are secure and your outbuildings have adequate protection.

Let’s face it at this time of year opportunistic thieves will do anything to try get something for nothing and that might include them walking straight-up your garden path to see what security measures you have installed within your premises. At this time of year many thieves will be targeting people’s garages and sheds knowing full well that these outbuildings have the least security fitted. Although we try our best to protect our homes we sometimes forget about our outbuildings.
