Keep Your Cash Safe During Xmas Shopping

Filed under: Personal Safety — admin @ 12:56 pm

As we near the end of the month, a lot of employees will be receiving their last wage packet before Christmas is upon them. This is the best opportunity to purchase those much-wanted xmas pressies. However, as we at Crime Prevention Products are constantly warning people, there are those amongst us who will gladly help themselves to your hard earned cash by snatching your purse or wallet!

Christmas shopping is a stressful enough time without having to endure the upsetting experience of finding yourself robbed or pickpocketed. To ensure that no one simply walks away with your money, we’d like to take this opportunity to publish a few tips to help protect your cash…

  • When taking money out of any bank ‘ATM’, make sure that no one can invade your space and ‘sneak a peek’ at your PIN number.
  • Once your cash is dispensed, place it somewhere safe before you walk away from the bank.
  • Never place you cash or wallet in your back pocket – pickpockets love this and will see you as an easy target.
  • Never take your cash out and count it in public, this will advertise to everyone that you have money.
  • When out shopping in busy stores and market places always ensure that your bag is kept securely closed.

One good tip is, if you happen to be carrying a lot of money, then try and separate your money into different pockets, purses and wallets! That way, if any pickpocket happens to get their hands on your money, they’ll not have stolen your full amount and you’ll still have some to continue shopping.

Beware Fake Online Websites

Filed under: Online Security — admin @ 12:56 pm

It’s easy to shop online. In fact it’s so easy that there are an estimated 32 million of us, here in the UK, who will opt to purchase goods online this year. The high majority of sites selling online are genuine, however, there is an ever-growing trend of websites set-up by cyber criminals to con online consumers into buying fake goods or just to harvest your credit/debit details.

I remember, a few years back, when my better half took to searching online for a certain type of boots for a christmas present. After a simple Google search and a few seconds later, she was rather impressed when she thought she’d found a bargain online. Here, were the desired boots and at half-price as well! Just before she went through the purchasing pages, she mentioned to myself off her extraordinary online bargain.

I ran a few searches on the site in question and found that although it had a .co.uk address – the domain registration was to someone in China. OK nothing too suspicious in that but enough to ring the alarm bells. A few more searches against the domain name and I found blog and forum posts by previous customers who had either never received their goods but still had been charged for them or the goods they had received were fake!

When I informed my better half of my investigations she replied but they’re on the 1st page of Google for the brand name. Indeed they were. The site, which was just registered a few months before December was sitting at the very top of the page for a rather heavily searched keyword term. The site in question had used Google’s Paid Advertising feature to sit atop of the pile – it obviously hadn’t been checked by Google to see if it was genuine or not! Or if it had – it slipped through the net, such is the perfection on some counterfeit sites it makes them difficult to tell from the real thing.

Then, just last week, she received a text from a family member claiming they’d found the same boots again at bargain price. This time, she knew exactly what to do and an online purchase of counterfeit goods, or worse, was averted.

This is why it’s good to hear about the work of the UK Metropolitan Police Central e-Crime Unit. So far, the e-Crime Unit has shut down more than 2,000 fake online stores – many with .co.uk domains.

With the christmas shopping period well underway, it’s always best to be cautious when you come across a website selling products at a bargain price. Do a little bit of homework, to see if they’re genuine or not. If you’re unsure, then don’t proceed with the transaction.

Remember, If it’s too good to be true, it probably is!

Don’t Gift Burglars Your Christmas Presents

Filed under: Personal Alarms — admin @ 2:13 pm

As we approach the festive period the constant bombardment of xmas ads begins, fuelling our kids’ expectations and excitement, as the only words we seem to hear from them now are “want that!” As parents we’ll do the best we can to make sure that they receive as many gifts as possible on their ‘ever-growing’ christmas list. Of course, there might be some forward-thinking parents out there who began to purchase xmas presents as far back as spring and summer to ensure that xmas isn’t an expensive hit all at once on their pockets. But the big presents don’t get bought until nearer the time and there’s a good reason for this…

The problem that many parents find, is that once they’ve purchased the big expensive gifts, is where too hide them till Santa’s Elves are ready to pick them up and store them at the North Pole storage facility. Till it’s time for them to magically appear under the christmas tree.

Some folk take to hiding presents in their attic or spare room while others will place them in outhouses, garages and even garden sheds. Keenly disguised under old blankets, boxes and various other objects away from prying eyes.

Unfortunately, it’s not just kids with curious eyes who are snooping around at this time of year. Many opportunistic thieves will be eyeing up old garden sheds, unprotected garages and outhouses as they know that they may contain your child’s christmas presents and these individuals will take advantage of the ‘season of goodwill‘ as a way to make a quick buck.

Crime Prevention Products stock plenty of outdoor security products in our online store including affordable shed, garage and garden security systems that will alert and warn you that someone is trying to enter your garden, shed or outhouse.

Household Winter Dangers

Filed under: Home Security — admin @ 1:13 pm

It has to be said, that although we’re already in November, the temperatures are still hovering above the average for this time of year. However, as we all know, the temperatures will soon drop and we’ll be forced to turn up the heating thermostat.

Over the Summer and into the Autumn we’ve heard news form the Met Office that the UK can expect another cold and snowy winter. In time as the temperatures begin to fall and we start using heating appliances that may have laid ‘redundant’ since last winter we have to be aware of the ‘silent killer‘ – Carbon Monoxide!

Carbon Monoxide poisoning is responsible for the deaths of around 50 people every year (source). Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning may be similar to those of viral cold and flu infections or even food poisoning.

It is inevitable that we’re going to turn on our heating systems to stay warm during cold periods of weather, however as we cannot see, hear or smell Carbon Monoxide it is advisable to keep your household safe with a Carbon Monoxide Detector and avoid the potential danger of Carbon Monoxide poisoning!

Be Prepared For Winter Driving

Filed under: Travel Security — admin @ 11:47 am

As we approach the winter holidays many people will be taking to the roads in order to spend time with their family, friends and loved ones over the festive period. Whilst every care has been taken to make sure that our roads (motorways, major and minor) are fit to travel, winter driving can be challenging for even the most experienced of motorists.

As the winter weather begins to take grip we have to start thinking about safety measures whilst driving on our busy roads. You just need to remember last winter and how quickly our Island was brought to a standstill as snow fell in record amounts and the temperatures plummeted.

Drivers and their passengers were caught out in the ‘cold snap’ with the unlucky ones having to spend the night huddled in their vehicles waiting to be dug out!

This is why we, at Crime Prevention Products, have written this blog post to encourage all drivers to make a check list before travelling in winter weather to ensure that if anything should happen they’ll be at least prepared…

  • Spare blanket kept in the car – just incase you are held up for any reason.
  • Torch with spare batteries.
  • First aid kit.
  • Sweets and chocolate – will help keep energy levels high.
  • Emergency Life Hammer – available from Crime Prevention Products.
  • Box of Matches or Lighter.
  • Tow Rope.
  • Fire extinguisher – available from Crime Prevention Products.

Remember, if you’re not comfortable about driving in winter weather and your journey is not essential then the best advice is to stay at home and be safe!

Protect Yourself From The Dark Side Of The Christmas Office Party

Filed under: Personal Alarms,Personal Safety — admin @ 1:33 pm

The mere mention of ‘The Christmas Office Party‘ and people begin to get a little excited or nervous (depending on your point of view). Christmas is traditionally a time where employees love to head out and enjoy themselves, drink lots of booze, eat plenty of rich food and ultimately have the chance to ‘tell the boss‘ what you really think of him/her. All pretty cliched and harmless I’m sure you’ll agree.

However, there can be a darker side to the Office Christmas Party festivities. As the drink flows, inhibitions will disappear and the courage to chat to other employees, you’d normally avoid, emerges. In all this inebriated spirit, body signals interpreted wrongly through booze or drugs can quickly develop into something else entirely.

Unfortunately, reported sex attack/assault figures do rise around the Christams Party period – too much heavy drinking given as the reason, either by the victim or the offender. Victims have also had their drinks spiked by rape drugs – so it is essential that even though ‘you let your hair down‘ you never let your guard down fully and be aware of your surroundings & what is happening around you.

As we pointed out in our Festive Exuberance Rape Crimes blog post from a couple of years ago…

“It’s not just females who are in danger but males as well. According to recent statistics, 9 out of 10 people who have suffered rape were drunk or had taken drugs and an incredible 84% of those attacked knew their attacker!”

Carrying a personal alarm system on yourself, ensures that if you need assistance its powerful 110+dB will not only alert other members of the public of your situation but will also give you those vital seconds you need to make your escape.

Winter Time Home And Personal Security Tips

Filed under: Home Security — admin @ 12:51 pm

Last weekend we said a fond farewell to the British summertime and adjusted our clocks accordingly, slicing an hour’s worth of daylight from our lives. At the moment, the only downside to adjusting our clocks to winter settings means we’ll get home from work in the dark. But as the week’s advance and winter time settles in, it’ll not be long before we’re heading off to work in the dark as well.

An expected rise in burglaries happens during the winter months as the cover of darkness makes it easier for sneak thiefs to get around. A piece of home security advice we’d like to offer home owners who get home after dark in the winter months is to think about installing security timers which can switch appliances on and off automatically at different times throughout the day – these can switch on lamps or radios – as there’s no better invitation to an opportunistic thief than you’re home sitting in darkness.

Also, elderly residents are often seen as ‘soft targets’ during the winter months. Which is why we urge people to “think ahead” in terms of protecting themselves. When it comes to personal alarms some may be too fidgety or too small to work with for our elderly customers and the pull rings can be somewhat impossible to grasp. Therefore we have the ideal personal alarm for those that have decreased mobility in their hands.

Our Chaperone Nightingale Personal Alarm has no cords or small pull rings just a very large button that activates the loud 120+ dB ear piercing alarm ensuring ease of use for elderly home owners.

Show Your Loved One You Care With A Personal Alarm This Christmas

Filed under: Personal Alarms — admin @ 1:17 pm

In just a short while, we’ll be celebrating Christmas and we all know what that means for menfolk… Trolling through packed shops being pushed, pulled and harried looking for an ideal gift for our loved ones. As we are aware, women see this excercise as a well thought out operation and know exactly what they’re going for and where they’re going. A far cry from the head-bursting experience most men will go through as they scan the shops for some random item which they’ll ‘hope‘ will win favour and be appreciated enough not to make the round trip back to the shops a couple of days later to exchange it for ‘what she really wanted’!

However, you can always safe some face if you’re main gift doesn’t work out by purchasing a Heart Trinket Alarm as a small personal alternative present which shows you care about her safety.

The Heart Trinket Alarm is an attractive heart shaped personal alarm with a stylish metallic finish and is available in 3 eye-catching colours. It’ll fit discreetly into any modern handbag, purse or attach neatly to a house key ring. It may look small and pretty but it packs a powerful 110dB alarm when triggered giving your loved one the perfect opportunity to make their escape when needed.

The best thing is you can buy the Heart Trinket Alarm online and have it delivered without any effort on your part. It’s a perfect gift for Christmas as it shows you care about their safety, it’s really quite affordable and looks great as an accessory.
