Over the last few months, we’ve heard in the media that crime, especially burglary, is on the increase. People are tempted to burgle for all sorts of reasons however the end game is always the same – convert small, valuable items (such as jewellery, mobile phones, and laptops) quickly into cash. Backpacking Safety Tips and Devices

Filed under: Travel Security — admin @ 10:18 am

Each year, we save our pennies in preparation for the family annual holiday to help us relax, recharge our batteries before we begin to settle back into the ol’ daily routine. However, as the family matures our grown children will soon decide that holidaying with the parents ‘cramps their style’ and will decide to make their own holiday plans. In recent years backpacking has become very popular among young people as it’s an affordable way to travel and offers a great experience to sample different cultures close at hand.

Although backpacking holidays can be very rewarding and safe, as parents we naturally worry about our children’s safety as they head off on their ‘big adventure’.

Here are just a few backpacking safety tips and devices that any backpackers should be aware of before they head off on their big experience:

  • Arrange ‘home callback times’ most populated areas areas will have wi-fi making it easy to communicate back home. If you’re travelling in less populated areas do your homework before you set-off as to how and when you’ll be able to communicate.
  • Backpackers should invest in purchasing good quality locks to help keep their valuables safe.
  • Personal alarms are a great way to ward off unwanted attention and help give any backpacker those vital seconds to make an escape.
  • Any backpacker should always research the country they’re going to visit beforehand as it will help in understanding the different customs and laws they’ll face.

At Crime Prevention Products we can supply you with range of travel and backpacking security devices which will help add to their safety and ease the concerns of parents.

It’s Time To Graduate From the School Of Anti Burglary

anti-burglary devicesEvery day in the media we hear more stories about homes and businesses that have being burgled. In some instances the police have been able to catch those responsible and have dealt with them accordingly. However, and more worryingly, there are thousands of burglars that manage to escape the ‘long arm of the law’ and continue to carry out their criminal activities.

In recent months we’ve read, and heard, that our coalition government are slashing the police budget, inevitably meaning that there are going to less ‘bobbies‘ patrolling our streets. Some people may say that this is “just the world we live in” but figures from the latest crime survey state that thefts of vehicles have risen by 6% in the past year as well as a 4% rise in the theft of unattended mobile phones and purses. Can this all be the result of our failing economy as some people try to make money any way they can?

One area that has seen a massive increase over the last year is domestic burglaries which has risen by 14% in the past year. This figure is increasingly worrying to home owners who wish to protect their possessions as well as their families. For this reason, many home owners are finding the need for good home security and garden security systems. At Crime Prevention Products we offer a host of ideal security systems from anti-climb spikes for your garden wall to secure door/window locks to top of the range alarm systems.

However, no matter which type of security system you choose, make sure that all entry points of your home are covered… After all, you don’t want to give an open invitation to burglars to come in and help themselves to your belongings. Don’t leave anything to chance, that way the risk of you becoming the next burglar statistic are considerably lower.

Bailed To Commit Crime

Filed under: Crime News — admin @ 3:13 pm

bailed criminals reoffendWhen someone commits a criminal act we would expect them to feel the full force of our judicial system, and in most cases we would hope that they would serve their time and learn from their ‘mistakes’. After all, doesn’t everyone deserve a second chance? However, over the last few years our judicial system has come in for criticism for costly mistakes that have been made! Mistakes such as letting dangerous criminals out on bail.

One such case was Jonathan Vass, this violent and dangerous man was let out on police bail only to stab his his ex-girlfriend Jane Clough to death in a hospital car park after she had just finished her shift in the A&E department at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

Of course it would be silly to assume that every person that is out on bail is a hardened criminal, however in a report published by the Ministry of Justice it stated that people (in England and Wales) who are freed on police bail are responsible for committing one offence every four minutes (source, opens in new window). This ‘crime wave’ equates to 142,537 crimes that are carried out by suspects already on bail.

In Merseyside, last year, police officers charged 26 people with murder, five of them allegedly committed the crime while out on bail for separate offences… These figures are not just isolated to Merseyside, they are mimicked throughout the country. The report estimates that around one murder every week is carried out by somebody who has been placed on bail for a separate offence.

At Crime Prevention Products we recognise the right people have to protect their homes as well as themselves and family! That’s why we supply a vast range of personal alarms and burglar alarms. These alarms will not only alert passers by that you need assistance but our home alarms will also help alert the proper authorities that someone has intruded into your home.

The Spoilt Generation And The School of Hard Knocks

Filed under: Crime News — admin @ 1:43 pm

dealing with school violenceAs the school year draws to an end, there will be thousands of children eagerly awaiting the last bell of term to ring – sadly, for some, this will not be to rejoice the start of the summer holidays but to escape the beating and intimidation they’ll have received on a daily basis while at school.

It’s been reported that as many as 12,688 school children are subjected to grievous or actual bodily harm during the year. This shocking figure equates to 65 serious assaults every day. The report which was published in the Daily Mail, (source, opens in new window) used data under the Freedom of Information laws. They found out that as well as criminal damage, harassment, theft, and sexual assault there was one under 14 year old child from Leicestershire who was convicted for carrying a gun whilst in school.

The report states violence in schools has been steadily rising since 2008 and is now believed to be at a record high. What’s more, the report states that this figure is probably a lot higher as many more pupils are subjected to bullying but are reluctant to tell anyone, and so it continues…

Dr. Aric Sigman, a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, claims that children are becoming violent before they even get to school. Dr. Sigman coins this generation of pre-school troublemakers as ‘The Spoilt Generation‘ and states that a lot of their misbehaviour is down to “the lack of boundaries and the reversal of authority” between parents and their children.

Such is the worrying trend of violence in our schools that the government released new guidance for teachers to help improve discipline in schools (source, opens in new window). The coalition government has tore up the former 600-page guidance – introduced by the Labour government – and replaced it with just 52 pages. Its aim is to put the power back with the adult teacher and is outlined as so…

  • Schools should not have a ‘no touch’ policy. It is often necessary or desirable for a teacher to touch a child (e.g. dealing with accidents or teaching musical instruments).
  • Teachers have a legal power to use reasonable force. They can use force to remove a pupil who is disrupting a lesson or to prevent a child leaving a classroom.
  • Heads can search without consent for an extended list of items including alcohol, illegal drugs and stolen property.
  • Heads have the power to discipline pupils who misbehave outside the schools premises and outside schools hours.
  • Schools must have measures in place to deal with bullying both in and outside of school.

As parents we try to help our children as much as possible, however we all understand that we cannot be with them all the time. At Crime Prevention Products we have a vast array of personal alarms which will fit discreetly on their school bags or act as a key ring. Many of these alarms emit a powerful siren which will allow your child precious seconds to make their escape.

We hope they never have to use these alarms, however, prevention is better than the alternative.

Can The Recession Affect Crime?

Filed under: Crime News — admin @ 10:53 am

is opportunistic theft on the increase ?This year, the people of the British Isles have been subjected to various ‘economic recovery’ measures which have been set out by the new coalition government, in-order to get our countries financial stability ‘back on track’. Some of these measures included VAT increased to 20%, budget spending cuts introduced to local councils, Child Trust Funds axed and funding to the Police in England and Wales slashed by 20% over five years.

As these spending measures begin to bite, residents in the UK have been hit hard by huge price increases to their basic commodities such as heating, food and fuel. Not only that, but with the slow growth in industry coupled with less money to spend, many businesses have been forced to close, or have had to make tough decisions regarding redundancies and wage freezes.

With the government now turning its attention to tackling the benefit system some residents who rely on welfare payments will now face a future of uncertainty and hardship.

The stark truth of it all is, if you read between the lines, there is a real concern that those already living in the poverty level could be forced further into “deep poverty” levels.

With people having less money, it has been reported that many places have seen an sharp increase in crimes such as burglaries and robberies.

Recent reports from the Metropolitan Police show that the number of robberies in London last month had risen by as much as 15% compared to May 2010. Not only robberies but house burglaries have seen a rise of 18.5% and thefts of vehicles have also risen (6%). These figures are not just isolated in our capital city, reports from the Government’s crime mapping website showed increases in burglary in six areas, while robberies rose in three.

When asked about the statistics Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson admitted he is ‘concerned’, he also went on to point out that Scotland Yard had seen ‘reductions in most categories of violent crime’ in the last financial year. However, when questioned further Sir Paul Stephenson revealed ‘What I am concerned about is the burglary‘.

Initiatives are underway to help tackle burglaries in local areas. Sheffield Police announced they’re visiting known burglars up to three times a night, in some instances, in a bid to prevent crooks re-offending. Police have also started contacting unsecured homes they come across such as those with windows left open and doors unlocked.

With the threat of opportunistic theft on the increase we advise that every resident properly protects their property.

Every Generation Needs A Cycle Revolution

Filed under: Bike Security — admin @ 2:20 pm

bike securityWe are constantly being told by health experts and the media that we’re fast becoming a nation who are overweight and unfit! It’s reported that in years to come many of us will suffer major health problems including various cancers, high blood pressure, heart problems and diabetes to name a few. With all these health problems predicted it’s estimated that our already overstretched Health Service could buckle under the financial burden required to cope with this overweight epidemic.

In recent years, upon hearing this news, we would have rushed to the nearest gym as well as trying some fad diet to help get our weight problem back on-track. However, finances are tight and gyms & fad diets ain’t cheap to sustain over a period of time.

When it comes to weight loss and getting fitter, one of the best ways is to ‘get on your bike’ and become part of the cycling revolution. So many of us are now finding that cycling is not only economically better but are steadily getting fitter as well as losing weight. It’s not unusual now to see whole families cycling around their local park.

One of the main problems, that we at Crime Prevention Products find, is that although we love our bicycles when it comes to protecting them we still find it a bit of a hassle. It hardly takes a few seconds to padlock and chain your bike to a secure railing or post. The alternative is, of-course, you’ll come back out from the local shop you just popped into for a few minutes to find your bike gone.

If you’re really serious about bicycle security from the genuine threat of bike theft then you cannot have better protection than the Bicycle Security Cycle Tracker. This clever device acts as a fully functional rear light, but the clever bit is that the tracker will send its location to a free worldwide online mapping website. If your bike happens to go missing then you’ll be able (with the help of the police) to recover your valuable possession.

Female Student Safety Gets Personal

Filed under: Personal Alarms,Personal Safety — admin @ 12:12 pm

female student personal alarmsIn just a few months, some of our brightest youngsters will be leaving home for the first time and heading off to study at university or college. Of course this is a very exciting time for most young adults. The prospect of forging new friendships, gaining independence and expanding their knowledge base with the occasional study period. Many university campuses also have the traditional students bar which will host various events and music concerts which can be a brilliant place for students to congregate, drink and socialise.

However, this can also be a very anxious time for both parents and students.

The National Union of Students (NUS) carried out a study in 2010 and found that one in seven female students had been the victim of serious sexual assault or serious physical violence whilst attending university or college. The report which interviewed over 2,000 women found that 43% of the female students interviewed said they thought they’d be blamed if they went to the police. (source, opens in new window)

We expect our educational establishments to be places where students can feel safe while studying and in most cases this has is proven to be the case. It’s when students go off campus and decide to walk home late at night that potentially is when most female student victims are assaulted.

Crime Prevention Products have a variety of personal alarms that can fit smartly with any students attire without being too obvious or cramping their style.

One such alarm is the ILA Pebble Personal Alarm In Strawberry… This cool looking accessory is activated by pushing the centre button and pulling the key chain away. The Pebble Personal Alarm emits a powerful 130db giving its wearer time to make their escape or help alert passers-by that they need assistance.

Another personal alarm is the ILA Pedometer Alarm which is ideal for the sporty student. Perfect for jogging as it counts calories burnt and the distance you’ve travelled plus it packs a mighty 130db punch.

Here at Crime Prevention Products we hope no student never needs to use their personal alarm. However, we also believe that students are better to be prepared than to have no protection at all.

Making A Mark On Crime

Filed under: Property Marking — admin @ 12:24 pm

property mark your possessionsOver the last few years there have been several crime platforms set-up that offer information about crimes that have happened in a particular area. One such initiative is the new Police UK website which provides you with helpful information about crime in a particular area. Thus giving potential house hunters the chance to checkout the neighborhood before they buy. Another website, that is growing in popularity, is the new It’s been Nicked, this ingenious site has been designed to help victims of theft try and recover their property.

Every year the police in England and Wales recover millions of pounds worth of seized goods including bikes, garden tools, computers, jewellery and clothing. Unfortunately, a lot of this recovered stock is never returned to its original owners meaning it’s destined for the police auctions.

One of the best ways of ensuring that your possessions WILL be returned (if they’re stolen) is to have them ‘Property Marked‘! This is done simply either with a UV pen, Alpha Dot or Compound Stencil Kits. At Crime Prevention Products we have a vast array of Property Marking Kits ensuring that all your valuables are protected, and in the unfortunate event of a theft are returned to their rightful owner.
