In Britain there are millions of homes that are protected with some kind of security feature such as a wireless burglar alarm system, extra window alarms and door security locks or even a simple heavy duty door chain and these are often enough to discourage an opportunistic thief from trying their luck. Yet, last year 5,199 people reported they were burgled and all because they didn’t lock either their front or back doors (source opens in new window).
An honest yet costly mistake and it just goes to prove how easy a thing it is to do. Especially if you have things on your mind, or just having a neighbourly chat or like most cases you’re simply in too much of a rush to remember to shut your door properly.
When it comes to home security there is one area that many householders still feel intimidated by, and it is none-other than that of the doorstep cold caller! The thought of some stranger chapping your front door trying to sell their goods or sign you up for a cheaper utility contract can be annoying and even pressurising for some. Add to that, there are individuals out there that ‘pretend’ to be doorstep cold callers to gain access then you can see why this is a grey area of home security.
People often assume that bogus doorstep cold callers only prey on elderly residents. However, anybody can become a victim. There are several tips you can use to prevent yourself becoming a victim, such as :
- Place your door on the chain so that it cannot be fully opened.
- Ask to see the callers identification before continuing.
- If in any doubt call the company they say they are representing and don’t let anyone into your home until you are sure.
- Put up a sign that says, ‘No Salesmen or Canvassers’.
- Be aware of the risks of opening your door to doorstep sellers and the tricks they may use to get you onside.
One of the best ways to stop opportunistic bogus thieves from entering your home is to have a door chain fitted which will limit the amount your door will open. Here at Crime Prevention Products we have a variety of door protection devices such as door chains, door viewers and mirrors that enable residents to view visitors that are standing at their front door without interacting with them.

One of the hardest jobs that any of us will ever encounter in our lives is being a parent. From a childs very early age we try to explain the difference between right and wrong. If they happen to do something inappropriate we explain why, and the possible consequences of their actions. As our children grow and mature we expect then to realise for themselves what is right and what is wrong – but do they?
It would be unwise to underestimate burglars and opportunistic thieves by thinking that they’ll never enter your neighbourhood just because you reside in a ‘respectable area’. Research has shown that if your a typical ‘BMW’ driver and live in a semi-detached house your an ideal target for a burglar. That is why it is imperative your home has some kind of security to help aid in warding off an attempted theft.
When it comes to protecting our possessions, some home owners still believe that simply locking the doors and windows of their property will be enough to ward off a potential thief, and, in some instances this is the case. However, as millions of residents have found out to their dismay this is largely never nearly enough to protect your possessions from simply disappearing.

The mere mention of the word crime and most people can relate to an experience of having their possessions stolen, money dishonestly taken from them or even attacked in the street by some thug. Crime is present in every city, town and village in the country, whether it’s at street level or more sophistically through your computer via the Internet.
With the warm weather still hovering above Britain, most people love nothing better than to make the most of it and head to the seaside. Beach front shopkeepers, market sellers and kiosk owners also love this time of year for the warm weather brings with it throngs of visitors intent on purchasing something as a reminder of their seaside visit. However, sometimes the visitors aren’t of the friendly calibre.
It has to be said that with all the warm weather and the extra bank holidays recently, it’s helped put a welcomed smile back on a lot of faces. During the warm spell, the good folk of this Isle headed to their local beer garden or organised barbecues and garden parties while others loaded up the car and headed off to the coast for that traditional ice cream or chips. It truly has been a great couple of weeks.
It has been reported this week that The World’s most wanted man, Osama bin Laden, has been killed in a planned attack by American special forces. As the news began to filter through, many americans, that are perhaps not accustomed to condoning violence, found themselves partying and rejoicing at the demise of this head of terror. Thus giving closure to many families. Osama bin Laden and al-Qa’ida have been attributed to the deaths of nearly 3,000 Americans in the 9/11 atrocity as well as the Bali bombings the London Transport 7/7 bombings and numerous other terrorist attacks throughout The World. The killing of Osama bin Laden has been seen as a major triumph against organised terrorism worldwide.
