If you’re going to a New Year Party, or even hosting one yourself, here are some simple steps worth considering to help keep you safe from harms way as we celebrate the start of 2011.
- If you’re using a car to get to your New Year’s Party make sure the driver is sober, Police are extra vigilant at New Year and even 1 Beer or drink may be enough to fail a Drink Driving test.
- Take extra care if you’re out using the roads during the New Year period, drunk driving accidents are still significantly higher than the rest of the year. Watch out for drunk pedestrians straying on to the road as well.
- If you’re staying away over the New Year period, leave your contact details with a trusted neighbour – ask them, if they could, to pop in and open/close the blinds/curtains to give the impression that someone is still at home.
- Make sure you eat a hearty meal before you start to indulge in the merriment, don’t drink on an empty stomach – it could lead you to getting drunk faster and losing your bearings. This is the biggest danger for a drunk person – they could get themselves in to harms way or even become the person doing the harming – all because they had too much to drink.
- Try to become aware of your surroundings – if you’re going to larger New Year parties make sure you know the locations of the exits … be aware of pickpockets, keep valuables and money in a safe place. That goes for alcoholic drinks as well, never leave your drink unattended because it can be easily spiked – if you do start to feel uneasy, make sure you inform someone in your group or an authority figure at the party.
No one wants to be a party pooper, especially at New Year, but accidents and crime does happen – Fact! If you think ahead and plan accordingly you’ll likely never run in to any bother but if you do, at least you’ll be prepared.

As the bells toll at midnight, on the last day of the year, many residents will be busy celebrating the start of another year, while others will contemplate and reflect on the one just past. Traditionally, in many parts of the country (such as Northern England and Scotland) it is custom for folks to head out and celebrate bringing in the New Year with their neighbours. With some homes lying empty there may be alternative motives for someone chapping your door. Opportunist thieves love nothing better than a home that looks unoccupied, and if you’re out ‘First Footing’ or spending New Year elsewhere, you can be assured these type of criminals will be in your home given the chance.

Generally at this time of year many residents get filled with Christmas cheer, yeah right, those that are feeling christmassy haven’t headed out to the shops over these last few weekends. The hustle and bustle, the loss of manners as people charge past can have even the most mild-mannered person on the verge of a cussing volley. However, in amongst all this pandemonium, there are individuals and groups looking to ruin your Christmas shopping experience. They see you as a way of making easy money and they know at this time of year people are distracted even more than normal with Christmas weighing on their minds rather than their own security.
Each year we try our best at decorating not only our traditional Christmas tree but the whole house – inside as well as out. Using rope lighting and in recent times, fibre optic technology, we now have everything from Santa and his reindeer’s to trees and falling stars and even polar bears pretending to ski off your roof. Every year, our ‘inner child’ tends to resurface and we purposely head out to look for even more up-to-date decorations to add to our collection.
