Staying Safe During The New Year Party

Filed under: Personal Safety — admin @ 12:23 pm

If you’re going to a New Year Party, or even hosting one yourself, here are some simple steps worth considering to help keep you safe from harms way as we celebrate the start of 2011.

  • If you’re using a car to get to your New Year’s Party make sure the driver is sober, Police are extra vigilant at New Year and even 1 Beer or drink may be enough to fail a Drink Driving test.
  • Take extra care if you’re out using the roads during the New Year period, drunk driving accidents are still significantly higher than the rest of the year. Watch out for drunk pedestrians straying on to the road as well.
  • If you’re staying away over the New Year period, leave your contact details with a trusted neighbour – ask them, if they could, to pop in and open/close the blinds/curtains to give the impression that someone is still at home.
  • Make sure you eat a hearty meal before you start to indulge in the merriment, don’t drink on an empty stomach – it could lead you to getting drunk faster and losing your bearings. This is the biggest danger for a drunk person – they could get themselves in to harms way or even become the person doing the harming – all because they had too much to drink.
  • Try to become aware of your surroundings – if you’re going to larger New Year parties make sure you know the locations of the exits … be aware of pickpockets, keep valuables and money in a safe place. That goes for alcoholic drinks as well, never leave your drink unattended because it can be easily spiked – if you do start to feel uneasy, make sure you inform someone in your group or an authority figure at the party.

No one wants to be a party pooper, especially at New Year, but accidents and crime does happen – Fact! If you think ahead and plan accordingly you’ll likely never run in to any bother but if you do, at least you’ll be prepared.

Stop Burglars Having A Prosperous New Year

Filed under: Home Security — admin @ 12:30 pm

As the bells toll at midnight, on the last day of the year, many residents will be busy celebrating the start of another year, while others will contemplate and reflect on the one just past. Traditionally, in many parts of the country (such as Northern England and Scotland) it is custom for folks to head out and celebrate bringing in the New Year with their neighbours. With some homes lying empty there may be alternative motives for someone chapping your door. Opportunist thieves love nothing better than a home that looks unoccupied, and if you’re out ‘First Footing’ or spending New Year elsewhere, you can be assured these type of criminals will be in your home given the chance.

One of the most distressing times, in anyone’s life, is the experience of being burgled. The thought of someone unknown being in your home going through your personal possessions is a horrendous one. With Christmas just passed, there still may be kids toys and gifts laid out on the living room floor, all quick and easy targets for a burglar.

One of the best ways to decrease your chances of being burgled is to make them think that you’re still at home. Here at Crime Prevention Products we have a large selection of home security products including the ideal solution for making people believe you’re home is occupied – the Fake TV. Designed like a small lamp the powerful lights glow as if you’re still in the house watching your favourite after dark show.

Have a safe New Year!

iPhone Safety App Launched

Filed under: Crime News — admin @ 11:37 am

An American security business owner, Frederick Hanover, has launched a new security application for iPhone users which he states will enhance personal safety. The imSafe App for Smart Phones provides real time police, emergency medical, and fire response to your GPS tracked location from its professional 24-hour-a-day worldwide security centers.

The imSafe App connects a person in trouble to their nearest emergency provider. To send the alert, you just need to touch the imSafe screen button three times, then the App will translate your nearest GPS coordinates to the nearest physical street address, where the security center staff will alert the local authorities. The imSafe App can also be handy in an abduction scenario where the security center can track anyone moved against his or her will, transmitting new coordinates for every 10 meters the person has been moved.

Of course, there are limitations with the imSafe App, as a GPS coordinate can only have a fixed ground position and cannot tell if you’re on the first floor of a building or the tenth. Although the imSafe App is just over £3 to download to your smart phone – there is a monthly subscription charge of around £7 , so that you’re hooked up to the 24/7 security center.

Fighting Against A Fraudulent Christmas

Filed under: Counterfeit Detection — admin @ 12:27 pm

With only a few shopping days left, and what with the recent severe winter weather, it is a high priority for most to access the local shops and markets and get as much shopping in as possible. This is usually a very busy time for some street traders and small shops with waves of shoppers bustling in and out, with money passing hands quickly before the next customer pushes in.

This is all a welcome boost to shop owners, however there is a darker side to this time of year… Counterfeit money is big business and millions of pounds of it is in our streets every day. Organised crime gangs know that shopkeepers and market traders are ideal targets and will be looking to pass on fraudulent money in return for legitimate goods. Remember, once you receive a counterfeit note it is illegal to pass it on to another customer. By Law you have a legal responsibility to take the fraudulent money to the proper authorities and out of circulation.

Here at Crime Prevention Products we have a number of counterfeit devices, that will quickly check and highlight to you that the money you’re receiving is either legal or fraudulent.

Xmas Party Season Safety Tips

Filed under: Personal Alarms — admin @ 2:03 pm

Over the next weeks, many work employees will be heading out to restaurants, bars and night clubs as the winter party season gets in to full swing. With more people than usual out and about, celebrating and being merry, it is essential that a proper responsibility of care is shown by all. Nobody want to be a party pooper but neither is starting the New Year off with a harrassment charge hanging over their heads.

As the drinks begin to flow the atmosphere can become more and more relaxed, causing a certain amount of flirtation between some employees. Some people say this is ‘healthy’, and some people enjoy the attention it brings. However, when does simple flirtation become full blown harassment? For some men and women the Christmas party will end in tragedy with them being sexually assaulted. Work functions are covered by sexual harassment laws and the Work Christmas party is considered a ‘work activity‘ and is not just confined to your place of work – it can be an off-site party and also includes the journey home.

Examples of sexual harassment at a Work Christmas party include the following :

  • Unwelcome physical contact
  • Suggestive comments / sexual propositions
  • Leering / staring
  • Unwelcome enquiries into a person’s private life
  • Persistent unwanted requests to go out

Crime Prevention Products have a wide range of personal alarms that will alert anyone passing by that you are in need of assistance. A personal alarm can be a great detterent and help the victim gain some valuable seconds to get away from their attacker.

Christmas Shopping Safety Tips

Filed under: Crime News — admin @ 12:49 pm

Generally at this time of year many residents get filled with Christmas cheer, yeah right, those that are feeling christmassy haven’t headed out to the shops over these last few weekends. The hustle and bustle, the loss of manners as people charge past can have even the most mild-mannered person on the verge of a cussing volley. However, in amongst all this pandemonium, there are individuals and groups looking to ruin your Christmas shopping experience. They see you as a way of making easy money and they know at this time of year people are distracted even more than normal with Christmas weighing on their minds rather than their own security.

When you go out Christmas shopping there are a few pointers that YOU have to remember:

  • Never ‘flash’ the cash, in a busy high street it would only take a second for someone to snatch your money and disappear into the crowd.
  • When in your local department store don’t leave your already purchased goods on the end of basket or pushchair while you head off looking for more goods.
  • Never leave your kids/babies unattended as you head off to the other side of the shop looking through the sale items.
  • Remember at this time of year there are going to be thousands of people heading out doing their Christmas shopping everyone knocking and banging into you, it would only take a professional pick pocket a few seconds to walk away with all your hard earned cash.

This Christmas be safe and think about what you are doing with your money and presents.

Christmas Decoration Safety Advice

Filed under: Fire Safety — admin @ 1:16 pm

Each year we try our best at decorating not only our traditional Christmas tree but the whole house – inside as well as out. Using rope lighting and in recent times, fibre optic technology, we now have everything from Santa and his reindeer’s to trees and falling stars and even polar bears pretending to ski off your roof. Every year, our ‘inner child’ tends to resurface and we purposely head out to look for even more up-to-date decorations to add to our collection.

To be honest these all look great and in many cases are perfectly safe, however at this time of year there are always criminal organisations that will import inferior decorations for you to purchase. Many of these products will not conform to any of our Health and Safety regulations which carries the risk of putting your family in extreme danger. Also don’t overload plug sockets and remember to turn off all lights when you go to bed, including the fairy lights on any indoor Christmas trees.

Here at Crime Prevention Products we stock a range of fire extinguishers, fire blankets and early detection devices such as smoke alarms just incase the unthinkable should happen.

Inappropriate Material

Filed under: Crime News — admin @ 12:35 pm

When it comes to home and personal security most residents will show a bit of common sense when it comes to locking up their homes, garages and garden sheds at night. Some will even discreetly carry around personal rape alarms, and nearly everyone will lock their front door as they head out. However with the introduction of the internet and particularly social networking sites everyone has to be aware of what they are posting or signing in to, personal information can very easily be accessed if it is not controlled properly.

In recent events, sensitive material has been allowed to be published on the internet to the embarrassment of several top ranking officials, governments and even the Royal family, proving that no one is 100% safe.
