Personal Alarms – the Confidence to Walk Home at Night!

There are two basic groups of people who worry an awful lot about walking home in the dark, or even just after work or having dinner with friends: women and seniors. Some walk around with their keys in their hands, spiked out and ready to strike. At any rate, the idea of physical confrontation when alone and vulnerable is never pleasant and even if you’re in the fittest condition it isn’t likely that you actually want to take on an attacker with nothing but your fists, or maybe your keys.

So what’s the next best option? More and more people are starting to carry personal alarms around so that they feel protected, confident and able to walk around their neighbourhoods at night. Unlike other methods of protection (specifically like learning combat techniques like karate etc) personal alarms do not require you to actually engage your would-be attacker and personal alarms will also eliminate the time needed to dial a number on your cell phone and wait for an answer on the other end. Let’s face it, we all love our cell phones but if someone is running at you, what are the chances we can really contact someone and explain the situation? Not great.

Personal alarms are small devices that you can carry around with you on a daily basis. There is a huge choice of Battery or Gas operated versions available from Crime Prevention Products, and in the event that you encounter an attacker all you need to do is push a button or pull out a lever that will immediately cause a mechanical screech up to 140 decibels. Generally speaking, attackers really don’t want to stick around when there’s an alarm going off, attracting curious people to the scene. It just wouldn’t make much sense.

As stated, Personal Alarms come in two forms: Battery or Gas operated. Battery operated personal alarms are simple in that once you pull the activating cord or keychain, the alarm goes off and may only be stopped by replacing the pin mechanism. Gas Operated Personal Alarms are more complex in that they require you to push down on the cap to set off the alarm and although the sound output is similar to the battery type, they are much ‘shriller’ and therefore more ear piercing! With the battery type you have the option of throwing the alarm in a separate direction while you run away and the attacker will not be able to stop the it. Whichever you prefer, the personal alarm offers a tidy, handy little alternative to self-defence classes – just remember to check the batteries and gas often!
